Local Authorities are very significant investors and supporters of community based sport and active lifestyles opportunities
As well as commissioning and direct delivery of leisure and recreation services, their local planning responsibilities are a key factor in development and protection of facilities and new capital investment. More widely the physical activity agenda contributes positively to a range of key outcomes including health & wellbeing, community cohesion and economic development.
Our Work with the Local Authority Sector
Active Devon has a key local role to play in influencing and joining up local programmes, partners and policy. We work closely with Devon’s Local Authorities, both within and beyond the sport and leisure agenda, to help build strong local collaborative partnerships, secure national investment and do so in a way that is sensitive and appropriate to our diverse local communities. Typical examples of our work include:
- Developing and aligning consortia of local partners to deliver shared positive outcomes for local communities
- Contributing to evidence based planning by providing local perspectives from national insight and data-sets
- Providing funding advice and other guidance to local community groups
- Helping to make the case for physical activity as a key contributor to broader outcomes
- Advocacy and influence with national partners on behalf of Devon’s communities
Active Devon is keen to work with you to address the challenge of inactivity and secure the positive social benefits in your area
We can help you build approaches and partnerships that work and are right for your local communities. Our ambitious new strategy is collectively endorsed by all of Devon’s Local Authorities and we look forward to working with all eleven on achieving the vision of Everyone in Devon active for life.
What our Local Authority partners say
Here a a few examples of feedback from Local Authority colleagues we work with:
“All of the Active Devon team are always ready to help in every way… A professional body who support the local authority in getting everyone active”
Our work in Action
Devon County Council and its partner District authorities wished to collaborate on key public health themes. In respect of physical activity we were able to secure investment from both Public Health and Sustainable Transport teams to promote Active Mums Cycling. The initial concept had been piloted in Teignbridge and Torbay with national lottery investment Active Devon provided. The Active Mums Cycling project was scaled to eight areas across the county and in 2017 won a prestigious national impact award.
