A group of boys and girls wearing blue and red tops are in a school auditorium rehearsing a dance routine whilst copying and following the dance instructor who is stood in front of them. The red and blue tops look bright against the dark background and the children are concentrating whilst looking at the dance instructors.

Active Schools

Being physically active is essential for children and young people’s mental and physical wellbeing. It has been shown to improve brain function, behaviour, attendance, school engagement and academic results.

Data also shows us that four out of five children and young people are not physically active enough. The Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines recommend that children and young people aged 5-18 years should aim to be active for at least 60 minutes per day. Education settings are responsible for 30 of these minutes. Click on the link buttons below for guidance and resources to help you embed physical activity into your education setting and provide positive experiences that will enable, empower and encourage children and young people to be active for life.
