Free Cycle Training Sessions to Help Adults with Cycling and Confidence

Whether you’re a beginner looking to cycle or get fit, or a regular cyclist wanting to commute more and reduce your carbon footprint, Devon is a fantastic county for cycling. With such a variety of green and blue spaces to explore our beautiful county has something for everyone.

What is Adult Cycling Training?

Working in partnership with Devon County Council, Active Devon is offering free adult cycling training to help you get cycling, improve your skills and gain confidence. The sessions are for anyone 18 or over who lives or works in Devon and all sessions are delivered by qualified cycling instructors, in a safe and supportive environment.

Is There a Session for Me?

Yes! There are four different types of session to choose from, so there is something for everyone. Sessions take place in small groups of up to three people*. Your instructor will adapt the session to your goals and pace. The four sessions we have are:

Beginners: Learn to Ride

Suitable for complete beginners, those who have low confidence or have spent a long time away from cycling, these sessions take place completely away from roads.

Over an hour, you can expect to cover:

  • How to check your helmet is adjusted correctly and your bike is safe to ride before every ride
  • Mounting and balancing skills
  • Controlling your bike, cornering and braking
  • Learning and increasing confidence in looking around and how to signal

Beginners: Learn to Ride Women’s Sessions

These sessions cover the same topics as the Learn to Ride sessions above, but are for women riders, including trans, intersex and non-binary people who feel comfortable in a women-centred space. They are led by a female instructor, and can last up to two hours, in groups of up to six.

Cycle Confidence

These are mixed ability sessions, which take place part off- and part on-road, in quiet areas and cycle paths. The aim of these sessions is to improve your confidence in making short journeys on these types of paths.

A session will typically include:

  • How to adjust and fit your helmet correctly
  • How to check your bike is safe to use
  • Using your bike gears effectively
  • Make short road journeys safely
  • Feel more confident cycling among cars and traffic
  • Riding in small groups

Intermediate: Confidence on Roads

Aimed at intermediate riders, these sessions help to improve on-road confidence, including navigating amongst traffic. The session lasts up to two hours, during which time you can expect to cover:

  • Safe and appropriate road positioning
  • Increased confidence for riding on roads
  • How to approach and manoeuvre through various types of junctions

How to Book a Session

All sessions can be booked online, by clicking the link button below. We offer these sessions across Devon, and new dates are added regularly. If you can’t find a session suitable for your ability in a location near you, be sure to check back again soon, as we are always looking to expand locations.

What to Expect with Your Cycle Training

We’ve put together the short video below to show you what to expect with the adult cycle training. Take a look.

Here is a quote from an Exeter resident who attended a session:

“The instructors are really knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I was able to talk to them about areas that I found difficult or unsure of such as changing gear and they would tailor the session to include this.

“I initially was unsure of accessing the cycling sessions as an adult as I thought that I was too old and would be judged. I was not at all judged and actually felt encouraged and supported. I now cycle twice a week at the very least, have increased confidence and I really enjoy it!”  Exeter Resident

Cycle Training for Children: Bikeability

Cycle training for children is provided in schools through the Bikeability programme. It is delivered by our friends over at the Plymouth School Sports Partnership, who offer the full range of Bikeability courses.
