Deaf Get Active and Volunteer launch goes down a storm!

Saturday 6th October saw the launch of the Deaf Get Active and Volunteer project at Haven Banks in Exeter.  The project is a partnership between Living Options and Active Devon. The funding from Sport England will bridge the gap between the Deaf and Hearing communities by offering opportunities for volunteering and participation in various activities.

Over 25 people braved the elements to take part in a host of activities from Stand Up Paddle-boarding to Climbing, Kayaking and Boxing.  Around 30 volunteers supported the event in a whole host of ways including sign support, video production and event support.

Valerie Copenhagen from UK Deaf sport who delivered an effective communications course said “ The launch event was a fantastic day with lots of opportunities for people to try something new, do some activity, learn, and to hopefully feel more confident in doing some physical activity or volunteering. Active Devon and Living Options have demonstrated that collaborating in this way for the project will lead to more positive outcomes for the Deaf community and the launch event was a really positive sign of things to come.”

The event is a springboard for a range of new opportunities for the Deaf community to access activities which may previously have been inaccessible. Anyone that volunteers through the project will also be offered some exciting opportunities for training and development both as leaders and as mentors.
