A man, who is sat on his bicycle, has stopped to look at the natural environment around him, of grass, bushes and trees, with the sun shining through the trees.

Our Environmental Action Plan for Positive Changes

Climate change is happening, and we all have a responsibility to act. Individuals and organisations have an impact on the environment and the sport and physical activity sector is no exception. If we work together, take action and share our learnings, we can help influence positive change.

What is Our Environmental Action Plan?

Our Environmental Action Plan is how we will frame and deliver our environment work. We’ve opted for an action plan rather than a policy, to ensure that we are actively and constantly reviewing how we operate as an organisation.

Our Aim

Through improved understanding, we seek to reduce our impact on the environment and support partners to do the same. We are committed to ensuring our decision making is informed by environmentally sustainable and ethical considerations.

Our Objectives

Our objectives are to:

  • Develop understanding and raise awareness of the positive links between the environment and physical activity.
  • Reduce our carbon footprint through focus on Travel, Energy and Purchasing.
  • Support and empower our partners and communities to reduce their carbon footprint and improve their environmental impact.

Framing Our Environmental Work

Initial work will focus on the high impact areas of Energy, Transport/Travel and Purchasing to maximise our ability to reduce our carbon emissions and wider environmental impact.

Environmental work will then be categorised under more specific sub-themes, to understand the work in greater detail.

With our changes and actions, we will be guided by five main principles:

  • Reduce – Through research, collaboration and education, we will seek to understand our organisational carbon footprint and implement an action plan to work to reduce it.
  • Influence – We will work with key partners to influence positive environmental change. We acknowledge that many environmental challenges are outside of our control but understand that through working together, we can have a far greater impact.
  • Empower – We will empower the people we work with to make positive environmental changes and to help reduce their carbon footprint.
  • Share – We will share what we learn with our staff, external partners, networks and communities.
  • Leadership – We will make changes based on what we learned. Our Board and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) will hold this work to account.

Our Carbon Footprint

We completed our first carbon audit in 2023, using our very own carbon emissions calculator. Our calculator has been designed to capture data on our office and home electricity and heating consumption and staff travel behaviour (including commuting, travelling for meetings and long-distance travel). We will repeat the carbon audit every year to monitor progress. **

We did not look to capture our upstream or downstream emissions (emissions outside of our direct control) at this time but instead have opted to focus on the emissions within our control. Our largest direct carbon emissions come from energy and travel.

Will we seek to influence and reduce our indirect emissions, through a dedicated focus on purchasing.

Looking for More Information on How to Get Started?

For more information, or to find resources and tools to help you get started, check out the Sport Environment and Climate Coalition (SECC) Resource Hub.

The hub brings together the most relevant knowledge on sports sustainability with practical documents and resources that can be used to affect meaningful change.

** Note: We are working to better understand our carbon footprint. As we do this, we may add in new sources of carbon impact, resulting in an apparent increase in our footprint. Our footprint may also change with changes of staff or partners we work with.
